Facelift Surgery – An Overview

The purpose of a facelift is to reduce excess skin and fat, tighten underlying muscle tissues and reposition the remaining tissues for a firmer and more youthful appearance.

A wide variety of procedures is available to improve your appearance. The methods reduce signs of aging and improve unwanted sagging jowls, folds, and fine lines.

We will determine the right procedure for you based on your age, post-surgery goals, and your desired results.

Benefits of a Facelift

The benefit you get from a facelift is that it has a lasting impact on your appearance. The procedure reduces signs of aging, refines the skin and improve sagging jowls or “turkey waddles.” It also smoothes out heavy nasolabial folds and age lines. If you are not completely satisfied with injectables to meet your aesthetic goals, the next step would be facelift surgery. We use the best methods to achieve the desired appearance.

Facelift Surgery – Available Techniques

  • Mini facelift or partial facelift

A mini facelift is similar to a traditional facelift. It is sometimes called a short-scar facelift. The only difference is that it limits potential scarring.

When performing a mini facelift, an S-shaped incision gets made in front of and around the ear. The incision is about one-third the length of a traditional facelift incision. The small incision helps to minimize scarring. After the doctor makes the incision, the skin, and fat tissue get repositioned and pulled taut.

The advantages of a mini facelift procedure include minimal swelling, fast recovery, and less visible scarring. This procedure, however, is not appropriate for patients who require significant tissue lifting.

  • Mid facelift

The mid facelift addresses the middle portion of the face like the cheeks, nose, and lower eyes.

As you age, the cheek pads descend to the lower portion of the face due to gravity. The mid facelift corrects these flaws.

After the doctor makes the incision, the cheek pads get elevated back into position. This helps to alleviate nasolabial folds and age lines that contribute to restoring the youthful appearance of the cheeks. Additionally, it reduces or improves tension on the lower eyelids.

  • Full facelift/Deep plane facelift

A full facelift and a deep plane facelift are comprehensive treatments that produce dramatic results. A deep plane facelift involves mobilizing, elevating and suspending connective tissues. Then it gets re-draped in a more desirable position. The technical term for this is SMAS (superficial muscular aponeurotic system).

The technique lets the connective tissue remain intact while preserving the natural incision placement. The incision can get hidden behind the ear or in the hairline.

For a deep plane facelift to be successful, the surgeon has to be an expert in plastic surgery, microsurgery and have full knowledge of the nervous system.

A full facelift is similar to a deep plane facelift except the lack of complete elevation of the fat pads and surrounding connective tissue. Instead, the skin gets raised outwards. Then, the skin, muscle, and fat tissue get repositioned.

A neck lift is similar to a facelift. It is a surgical procedure that allows excess skin and muscle tissue to get reduced and re-draped for a more youthful and attractive appearance.

The incision for a neck lift gets hidden below the chin or behind the ears. The skin fat and muscle tissue get molded through the incisions and excess skin gets reduced.

After the tissue gets repositioned, the incisions are closed.

The required recovery time is similar to that of a facelift.

  • Facelifts and neck lift for men

It is a bit more complicated to perform a facelift on a man than it is to perform on a woman. Men have beards, which make their skin tougher. As a result, it is harder to hide incisions.

A better option for men would be to get facial plastic surgery work with experts having years of experience in facial cosmetic surgery.

At our Tampa practice, Dr. Davis has experience with facial plastic surgery. He customizes facelift surgery based on each man’s needs

The incisions get placed around hair tufts or sideburns. This option will hide the scars. “Turkey waddles” or heavy jowls then get improved with little to no downtime.

Facelifts vary among individuals. The facelift procedure that we perform gets customized to the individual patient’s particular needs and goals. We use a range of criteria to help determine the most suitable method based on a patient’s makeup, his or her cost requirements and the time that he or she takes to recover.

For example, some people do not have the time required for a deep-plane facelift recovery. An alternative would be a less invasive partial lift. On the other hand, if the patient has the time and the funds available, we offer a full range of options. We will find the one that is right for you.

Recovery and Aftercare – Post-surgery Process

After the completion of the facelift surgery, the treatment area gets wrapped in extra dressings. The dressings stay in place for 48 to 72 hours.

We do not use drains at Davis Facial Plastic Surgery. If we use drains, it would be temporary and they would get taken care of before the patient leaves the recovery room.

We stay in touch and call patients during the first 24 hours following surgery, including the night of the surgery, as well as the following morning. We stay in touch because 90 percent of post-surgical hematomas occur within 24 hours of surgery. A hematoma is a localized collection or pooling of blood beneath the skin. Maintaining this procedure lessens the complication rate.

About two to three days post-surgery, the patient should return to have the dressings taken care of. At that time, we check the incisions to make sure that they are healing properly. After getting rid of the bandages, we give the patients supportive dressings or girdles. The patients should wear these at night for a period of four to six weeks. The supportive dressings help the skin to heal much faster and also contour the skin.

For the next six weeks, we see the patients either weekly or bi-weekly to check their progress.

To help minimize risks and complications, we ask our patients to abstain from strenuous activity for up to six weeks. The same procedure goes for head and neck action. We are very strict when it comes to these procedures. This helps the tissue to heal properly. Following these procedures will ensure that the patients get superb results.

If there are any complications, Dr. Davis is available at any time.

How Much Does a Facelift Cost?

A facelift is a cosmetic procedure, which means your insurance will more than likely not cover it. Patients will then have to pay for full coverage.
