Botox®, also known as botulinum toxin type A, is produced from a refined bacterium. It paralyzes the facial muscles temporarily, leading to smoother skin and a more youthful appearance that lasts approximately three months.

How Is Botox® Administered?
Botox® is typically administered after a local anesthetic lidocaine cream has been applied to the area of the skin to be treated. However, some individuals do not experience enough discomfort to warrant a numbing treatment. Dr. Davis uses a very fine needle to inject Botox® into the facial muscles. How many injections a given patient will receive is dependent upon the individual patient and their degree and number of fine lines and wrinkles. The results of this in-office treatment typically last between three and four months. After this time passes, patients normally return for repeat treatments.
Botox® Procedure Preparation
You should inform Dr. Davis if you have received any injections over the previous four months during the preparation process. You will also be advised to avoid certain medications, such as aspirin, Advil, non-steroidals, supplements and other blood thinners one to two weeks prior to your treatment to decrease possible bruising in the areas treated. Many patients benefit from starting an anti-bruising regiment of Arnica and Bromelain that is available in our office.
Botox® Recovery
You should not rub your face vigorously or exercise strenuously after your Botox® treatment. You can move your face normally to smile and frown. An ice pack on your face or over-the-counter pain reliever such as Tylenol should minimize any swelling or discomfort you may experience after your treatment. You should also not lay down for four hours after treatment. Avoid having any facials or any skin care treatments for one week, but you can always schedule these prior to treatment. Dr. Davis may give you additional post-treatment directions during your treatment.
