Facelift Surgery – An Overview

A facelift is a cosmetic surgery that improves excess skin and fat, tightens muscle tissue and molds the remaining tissue to achieve a younger, more attractive look. There are several types of facelift procedures available that can reduce the effects of aging, erase unwanted wrinkles, folds and sags and revitalize a patient’s overall appearance. The type of procedure that best suits you will depend on your individual circumstances, including your age, time and cost considerations, recovery goals and desired end results.

Benefits of a Facelift

Cosmetic surgery can have a significant and sustained impact on your appearance. Getting a facelift will smooth your skin and reduce signs of aging, improve “turkey waddles,” and iron away unattractive folds and wrinkles. If injections have failed to produce results that meet your aesthetic ideals, cosmetic facial surgery is the next natural step toward attaining the look you desire. Such a change can impact nearly every aspect of your life, from just raising your self-confidence to even sparking new opportunities in your career.

Facelift Surgery – Available Techniques

Mini Facelift or Partial Facelift – Also known as a short-scar facelift, a mini facelift is comparable to a traditional facelift but is designed to inhibit potential scarring. During this surgery, an S-shaped incision is made around the curve of the ear. This incision is roughly one-third the length of that made during a traditional facelift. Through this incision, skin and fat tissue is maneuvered into a better position and pulled tight. The benefits of this method include faster recovery, decreased swelling and minimal scarring. However, this procedure may not be adequate for those who require substantial tissue lifting.

Mid Facelift – This procedure focuses on the central region of the face, specifically the area beneath the eyes, cheeks, and nose. Over time, gravity and the common effects of aging can cause the cheek pads to fall, but a mid facelift can correct this decline. Through the incisions made during this surgery, the cheeks can be restored to their original position and form. This can lessen or improve tension below the eyes, smooth wrinkles, and nasolabial folds and rejuvenate planes of the cheeks to appear fresher and younger.

Full Facelift or Deep Plane Facelift – These are comprehensive procedures that can yield breathtaking results. A deep plane facelift comprises the gathering and suspending of connective tissue (called the SMAS, or superficial muscular aponeurotic system) and placing it into a more attractive position. This approach allows the tissue to stay connected and protects the incision point, which is concealed beneath the hairline or behind the ear. A surgeon must be skilled and experienced in cosmetic surgery and microsurgery and have extensive knowledge of the nervous system in order to successfully execute a deep plane facelift. Like a deep plane facelift, a full facelift involves lifting the skin and repositioning underlying tissue but does not require the elevation of the entire connective tissue.

Neck Lift – A neck lift is similar to a facelift in that it reduces excess skin and muscle tissue and repositions it for a more attractive and youthful image. The incisions for this procedure are usually placed behind the ears or under the chin. Skin, fat, and muscle tissue are then molded through these incisions and excess skin is reduced. The recovery time for a neck lift is comparable to that of a facelift.

Facelifts and Neck Lifts for Men – Facial surgery for men can be more difficult than for women because the skin in the beard area is tougher. This can also make it more difficult to conceal incision points. Because of these challenges, it is critical that men considering facial cosmetic surgery consult with experts like Dr. Davis, veterans in the field. At our Tampa office, Dr. Davis tailors facelift surgery to match each man’s specific requirements. Incisions can be placed around sideburns or hair tufts in order to hide any potential scarring. We can then reduce sagging jowls or “turkey waddles” with little to no downtime.

It is crucial to note that the procedures we perform are not a “one size fits all” solution. Every surgery is customized to meet each client’s individual goals and requirements. We come to a decision on the best-suited procedure based upon a variety of criteria. This can include the patient’s physical shape and condition, his or her cost considerations and the time that he or she can commit to recovery and healing. For example, you may not be able to invest in the time required for a proper deep plane facelift recovery. In cases such as this, a partial lift may be a better alternative as it is less intrusive and requires less healing time. If time or monetary constraints are one of your concerns, please rest assured, we offer a complete set of solutions and will find one that best suits you.

Recovery and Aftercare – Post-Surgery Process

After surgery, we wrap the treated area in supportive dressings. These dressings usually remain in place for 48 to 72 hours. It is our policy at Davis Facial Plastic Surgery to not use drains. When we do utilize them, it is only temporary and they are reduced before the patient leaves the recovery room. For the next 24 hours, we keep in close contact, calling the patient both the evening of the surgery and the following morning. We insist on strong communication during this period, because 90 percent of post-surgical hematomas (swelling and pooling of blood within tissue) occur within 24 hours of operation and 90 percent of those occur within the first post-surgery hour. By maintaining a consistent connection with our patients, we can guarantee that complication rates remain extremely low.

About two to three days post-surgery, the client will return to the office to have their dressings taken care of and replaced. At this time, we also check the incisions to make sure they are healing properly. The patient is then given supportive dressings (or girdles). These are to be worn nightly for four to six weeks. These girdles promote healing and help contour the skin. During this time, we give regular check-ups every week or two to monitor the patient’s healing progress. We are very strict in our post-operative care and insist that clients follow instructions carefully and contact us at any time with any concerns. We do this in order to minimize any risk of complication and to ensure the best results. So that the tissue can heal properly, we ask that our post-surgery clients keep head and neck movement to a bare minimum and to refrain from any strenuous activity for up to six weeks. Following these instructions, our clients can expect outstanding results. If, however, complications do occur, you can contact Dr. Davis at any time.

Revisions and Potential Complications

Six months post-surgery, we schedule another check-up to determine whether there will be any necessary revisions. Thanks to Dr. Davis’s expertise and artistry in facial cosmetic surgery, the revision rate is negligible. However, if Dr. Davis does notice room for improvement, he will perform minor touch-ups free of cost. Please do not hesitate to take advantage of the expertise of both Dr. Davis and his staff. At our Tampa clinic, we utilize the latest techniques, manage all post-surgery care and monitor patients to ensure that healing and recovery go smoothly and as planned.

Although rare, complications can occur. These may include visible scarring, blood fluid collection, hematomas, abnormal bruising or facial nerve injury. It is important to understand potential complications so that you can make an informed decision on treatment options. But rest assured, through our experience, quality care and by applying safe and up-to-date techniques, we can greatly reduce the risk of any possible issues.

How Much Does a Facelift Cost?

Facial plastic surgery is considered cosmetic and, thus, is not covered by most insurance providers. Clients must be able to cover the full price of the procedure. Dr. Davis accepts many forms of payment, including cash, credit card and CareCredit® if there is a need for a financing alternative.
