Am I a good candidate for a facelift?
That’s a question almost everyone asks themselves when they start to see facial aging changes creep up on them. They notice sagging at their face and neck with jowl formation along their once smooth jawline. The youthful fullness at the cheeks has changed into a heavier smile line fold and tired look under their eyes. They will lift their cheeks while looking in the mirror to recreate a more youthful shape to their cheeks, smooth out their jowls hanging at their jawline, and lift the sagging skin at the neck. Those are among the basic goals of a facelift. We want to lift and reposition the skin and soft tissues of the face and neck to counter the changes gravity and aging placed upon them. A facelift should aim to restore a more youthful look while preserving a natural appearance.
Everyone’s Face is Different
Everyone experiences differences in what aging will do to their face and neck. Because of this, we approach facial aging in a customized and unique way for each patient. We have to ask if the aging changes that are bothering the patient might be able to be hidden with selective use of wrinkles fillers or volume fillers. If the changes are beyond what can be reasonably helped with fillers and volume restoration, we have to start considering the option of a facelift.
Different Types of Facelifts
We review the surgical options with our patients to find out which technique will be best suited to them. There are short incision mini-lifts, fascia/muscle lifts, or more complex deep plane lifts, all of which we use. We have to consider how significant are their facial and neck aging issues and what facelift technique will give them the best outcome with the most natural appearance and with minimal risk. There might also be additional procedures that could be done at the same time as the facelift to get an even better result in rejuvenation. Common add-on procedures include brow lift, eyelid lifts, liposuction, chin or cheek augmentation, and laser skin resurfacing.
