Facelift Surgery – An Overview
Facelift surgery’s goals are to do away with superfluous skin and accumulated fat, tighten up underneath tissues and readjust the residual tissue for a firmer and youthful look. There is a wide range of facelift procedures that can be utilized to improve a patient’s appearance, plus reduce the signs of aging and eliminate unwanted sagging, folds and age lines. The type of procedure that is proper for you will depend on a number of factors, which include age, post-surgery goals and desired results.
Benefits of a Facelift
A facelift has a real and lasting impact on appearance, as the procedure greatly refines the appearance of the skin, reduces the signs of aging, eliminates jowling, or “turkey waddles,” and smoothes nasolabial folds and age lines. When injected substances and fillers, such as Botox, are unable to produce the preferred results, facelift surgery is the next step in the natural progression of achieving the desired surgical outcome.
Facelift Surgery – Available Techniques
Mini facelift or partial facelift
A mini facelift (also known as a short-scar facelift) is similar in principle to a traditional facelift but is focused on limiting potential scarring. To perform a mini facelift, an S-shaped incision is made in front of and around the ear. The incision is about the same as that of a regular facelift, which helps diminish any scarring. After the incision has been executed, skin and fat tissue can be repositioned and pulled taut. The advantages of this procedure include reduced swelling, faster recovery, and less visible scarring. This particular procedure is not suggested for those patients who require considerable lifting of tissue
A mid facelift is directed to the middle section of the face that includes the face, cheeks, nose and lower eye area. Over time, the cheek pads gradually descend to the lower portion of the face due to gravity and the natural effects of aging. With a mid-facelift, these facial conditions can be corrected. Once incisions have been made, the cheek pads are elevated and returned to a normal position, which not only alleviates nasolabial folds and age lines but restores the youthful appearance of the cheeks and reduces or eliminates tension on the lower eyelids.
Full Facelift/Deep Plane Facelift
Both full facelifts and deep plane facelifts are inclusive treatments that can deliver amazing results. A deep plane facelift consists of mobilizing, lifting and suspending connective tissue, which is referred to as SMAS- superficial muscular aponeurotic system. The skin is re-draped in a more desirable position. This technique allows the connective tissue to remain connected and preserves the natural incision placement, which can be hidden around or behind the ear or beneath the hairline. In order to perform a deep lane facelift in a successful manner, the plastic surgeon must be knowledgeable in his field, as well as have an expert understanding and familiarity with the nervous system and microsurgery. A full facelift is somewhat similar to a deep plane facelift but does not entail the complete elevation of the fat pads and surrounding connective tissue, as the skin is raised outwardly with repositioning of skin, muscle, and fat tissue.
In a neck lift procedure, superfluous skin and tissue in the neck area is removed and then pulled taunt, which results in a younger looking, firmer and tighter neck area. The incisions in a neck lift are usually hidden underneath the chin or behind the ears. Through these incisions, the skin, fat and muscle tissue can be molded and excess skin eliminated. Once the tissue has been repositioned, the incisions are closed. The recovery time necessary for a neck lift is similar to that of facelift recovery, about two to three weeks.
Facelifts and Neck Lifts for Men
Performing facial surgery on a man is more complicated because of the fact that men have beards and coarser skin than that of women. It is also more difficult to hide surgical incisions due to the rougher skin of men. For this reason, it is very important for men who are considering facial plastic surgery to work with experts who have years of experience in facial cosmetic surgery such as Dr. Davis. Dr. Davis adapts his facelift surgery to the needs of the individual. Surgical incisions are arranged in areas where facial hair can aid in concealing any scarring, which helps to remove jowl line accumulation and any downtime with the procedure.
It is important to note that facelifts are not “one size fits all” solutions. Every facelift procedure performed is customized to the individual patient’s specific needs and goals. A determination is made as to the most suitable procedure based on a range of criteria that includes the patient’s physical makeup, his or her cost requirements and the time that he or she can allow for recovery. For example, not everyone can commit to the time necessary for a deep-plane facelift recovery; in such cases, a less invasive partial lift may prove a more attractive alternative. If you have the time or budgetary restraints, be assured that we offer a full range of available options and will find one that is exactly tailor-made for you.
Recovery and Aftercare – Post-surgery Process
Once facelift surgery is complete, the treatment area is wrapped in supportive dressings, with the dressings typically remaining in place for 48 to 72 hours. Davis Facial Plastic Surgery does not use drains and if any drains are used temporarily, they are removed prior to the patient leaving the recovery room. In the immediate 24 hours after surgery, close contact is maintained with the patient, as he or she is called the night of the surgery and the following morning. Communication is closely monitored because 90 percent of post-surgical hematomas (a localized collection or pooling of blood beneath the skin) occur within 24 hours of the surgery, and 90 percent of those incidents occur within the first hour after surgery. With regular patient contact after surgery, an extremely low complication rate is ensured.
Approximately two to three days after surgery, the patient returns to our office for removal of dressings. At this time, we also address the incisions and check that they are healing properly. Once the dressings have been removed, we provide the patient with supportive dressings (or girdles), which require four to six weeks of wear. These particular dressings advance the healing process and shape the skin. During a six- week period, the patient is seen on a weekly or bi-weekly basis to check on his or her progress. To help ensure optimum results and minimize the risk of complications, post-operative care is strictly controlled and supervised. In order for tissue to heal properly, patients are instructed to abstain from strenuous activity for up to six weeks, which includes head and neck activity. If the patient follows these instructions, he or she can expect superior results. However, if complications do arise, Dr. Davis can be reached at any time.
Revisions and Potential Complications
Approximately six months after surgery is complete, a determination can be made as to whether revisions will be necessary. Thanks to Dr. Davis’s expertise in the field of facial plastic surgery and his artistry in facelift surgery, the revision rate is extremely low. When, and if, Dr. Davis does see something that can be improved upon, he will perform minor touch-ups at no additional cost. Though a facelift may not be routine for everyone, it is for Dr. Davis, and the opportunity to utilize his expertise and that of his staff is there for the taking. We employ the latest techniques, take control of facelift surgery aftercare and recovery and monitor patients at our Tampa clinic to ensure that healing and recovery are effectively realized.
Though rare, complications can occur. Complications with plastic surgery can range from scarring that is noticeable, hematomas, fluid accumulation, irregular bruising, and injury with affected nerves. Possible complications and risks are pointed out to our patients and they are made aware of their treatment options. The risks of complications can be mitigated through quality care, experience and the utilization of modern, safe approaches.
How Much Does a Facelift Cost?
Facelift surgery is considered cosmetic and is not covered by insurance. Patients are responsible for the full cost of their procedure. Dr. Davis accepts payment through cash, check or credit card, as well as CareCredit® for a financing option.
