Am I a good candidate for a facelift?

Facelift Before and After Pictures Tampa and St. Petersburg, FLThat’s a question almost everyone asks themselves when they start to see facial aging changes creep up on them.  They notice sagging at their face and neck with jowl formation along their once smooth jawline.  The youthful fullness at the cheeks has changed into a heavier smile line fold and tired look under their eyes.  They will lift their cheeks while looking in the mirror to recreate a more youthful shape to their cheeks, smooth out their jowls hanging at their jawline, and lift the sagging skin at the neck.  Those are among the basic goals of a facelift.  We want to lift and reposition the skin and soft tissues of the face and neck to counter the changes gravity and aging placed upon them.  A facelift should aim to restore a more youthful look while preserving a natural appearance.

Everyone’s Face is Different

Everyone experiences differences in what aging will do to their face and neck.  Because of this, we approach facial aging in a customized and unique way for each patient.  We have to ask if the aging changes that are bothering the patient might be able to be hidden with selective use of wrinkles fillers or volume fillers.  If the changes are beyond what can be reasonably helped with fillers and volume restoration, we have to start considering the option of a facelift.

Different Types of Facelifts

We review the surgical options with our patients to find out which technique will be best suited to them.  There are short incision mini-lifts, fascia/muscle lifts, or more complex deep plane lifts, all of which we use.  We have to consider how significant are their facial and neck aging issues and what facelift technique will give them the best outcome with the most natural appearance and with minimal risk.  There might also be additional procedures that could be done at the same time as the facelift to get an even better result in rejuvenation.  Common add-on procedures include brow lift, eyelid lifts, liposuction, chin or cheek augmentation, and laser skin resurfacing.

Customization is Key

Wondering if a facelift is right for you is a common question people have.  We help guide our patients along the path of decision to find the best facelift procedure for them and customize their treatment for their individual needs.  At Davis Facial Plastic Surgery, all we do are faces and that facial specialization is what helps us get our patients the best outcomes possible.

Cheek Augmentation Techniques

Cheek Augmentation in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FL

Full, well-defined cheeks are among the hallmarks of both beauty and youth. Unfortunately, many of us do not have such cheeks, whether as the result of genetics or the passage of time. Thankfully, plastic surgery offers a potentially ideal solution in the form of cheek augmentation.

Facial plastic surgeon Dean G. Davis provides cheek augmentation of the highest standard to patients of his plastic surgery practice in Tampa. Cheek augmentation involves the placement of silicone implants, crafted to the precise specifications of the individual patient, in the cheek areas. These implants can be placed simply to improve the contours of the cheeks or as part of a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation strategy. It all comes down to the preferences, goals, and unique needs of each patient.

Are you interested in learning more about how you can add volume and definition to your cheeks? Dr. Davis would welcome the opportunity to meet you in person during a private, one-on-one consultation at his office. Simply contact our plastic surgery practice today, and we’ll be happy to schedule your consultation.

Technique for the Placement of Cheek Implants

One of the reasons that cheek augmentation is so popular is that dramatic yet natural-looking results can be achieved without any visible scars from surgery. This is because the cheek implants are inserted through incisions made in the inside of the mouth. Because cheek implants are anchored to the cheekbone, they will not shift out of place, maintaining a natural appearance for the patient’s lifetime. The shape of the implants can be customized to the unique contours of the patient, providing just the right amount of volume at precisely the right locations.

On Their Own or in Combination with Other Procedures

Cheek augmentation can be performed on its own for patients whose primary goal is to improve the projection or volume of their cheeks. However, many patients choose to have the procedure combined with other facial plastic surgery procedures as part of a total facial rejuvenation treatment plan. Cheek augmentation is commonly performed along with rhinoplasty, mid- or full face lift, blepharoplasty, neck lift, forehead lift, and chin augmentation. These procedures can all be customized to ensure that the results complement each other and produce harmonious, balanced results.

Alternative Techniques to Augmenting the Cheeks

For patients who wish to enhance the volume of their cheeks without having to undergo cheek implant surgery, treatment with injectable dermal fillers such as Restylane® and Radiesse® may provide perfectly satisfactory results. While the effects of these treatments are temporary, the treatments can be repeated safely as necessary. While the results will not be as dramatic as those possible through cheek implant surgery, they are extremely natural looking and quite durable. As with cheek augmentation with implants, injectable filler treatments can be performed on their own or in combination with other procedures, depending on the individual patient’s desires and needs.

For further information about cheek augmentation and how you might benefit from the procedure, we encourage you to call or email our plastic surgery practice today. We’d be happy to answer any questions you might have and assist you in booking your consultation with Dr. Davis.

Reasons for Getting Otoplasty (Cosmetic Ear Surgery)

Otoplasty in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FLDifferent parts of your face can make a dramatic difference when it comes to your overall appearance. For instance, having a recessed or small chin can make your nose appear larger. Eyelids that droop or sag can make you look haggard or tired even if you’re feeling very lively. And when it comes to the size and shape of your ears, that can also become problematic.

The team at our practice has helped a number of Tampa facial plastic surgery patients achieve excellent results through ear pinning and ear reduction surgery. Let’s take a moment right now to look at the basics.

Problems Associated with Prominent Ears

When a person’s ears are too prominent, they can dominate their entire appearance. This goes for whether the ear protrude out at the sides too much or if they are simply very large. Many children who have large ears are teased because of the size and shape, which can lead to issues with self-esteem. It’s for these compelling aesthetic reasons that patients visit our cosmetic plastic surgery center in Spring Hill for otoplasty.

About Otoplasty

Otoplasty is a cosmetic ear surgery that is designed to reshape and sculpt the patient’s ears. In addition to altering the size of the ears and the degree to which they project, otoplasty can also be performed for reconstructive reasons in case of ear injury or ear trauma.

Ideal Candidates for Otoplasty

The best candidates for Tampa otoplasty are adults and children who have ears that are very large, protrude in an undersirable way, or that have been injured in some fashion. These candidates should be in good overall health and also have realistic expectations about what the otoplasty can achieve.

Ways That Otoplasty is Performed

There are a few different ways that otoplasty can be performed:

  • Cartilage scoring techniques – Cartilage scoring will involve incisions made in the cartilage in order to rearrange position and improve overall shape of the ear(s).

  • Cartilage sparing techniques – Cartilage sparing will involve the use of stitches and sutures to improve the overall protrusion of the ears.

  • Ear reduction options – Ear reduction will involve the removal of cartilage and/or skin (e.g., the ear lobes) in order to improve the appearance of the ears.

Ideal Otoplasty Procedure for Your Needs

The best otoplasty option for your needs will really depend on the type of aesthetic problem that you face. In general, cartilage scoring and sparing are better for addressing the protrusion of the ears, while ear reduction is a better option for dealing with the size of the ears.

Other Options for Facial Cosmetic Surgery

In addition to otoplasty, there are plenty of other options for facial plastic surgery that can have a positive impact on your appearance. We can discuss all of these in more detail during a consultation.

Candidates Brow Lift / Forehead Lift Surgery

Brow Lift in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FLIf you want to look your absolute best, there are plenty of things that you can do: eat right, stay well-hydrated, exercise regularly, and protect your skin from the harmful effects of the sun. And yet doing all of that doesn’t guarantee that you will always look your absolute best. This is especially true when it comes to the issue of the furrows on the brow. A few lines there may add some sense of distinction, but most times they leave people looking worried, tired, and prematurely old.

When you visit with a skilled Tampa facial plastic surgeon, you’ll be able to learn about all of your options for improving your overall appearance. One surgery especially good for people with brow line issues is the brow lift, which we’d like to look at right now.

About Brow Lift Surgery

Brow lift surgery refers to a facial lift procedure that tightens the skin of the forehead region. By doing this, patients will reduce the appearance of those telltale furrows along the brow area. We can perform this surgery on its own or as part of a combination of treatments at our facial plastic surgery practice in Tampa and Spring Hill.

How a Brow Lift is Performed

During the brow lift, incisions are made along the upper hairline area. Through these incisions, underlying tissues are adjusted and excess skin removed. The remaining skin is then pulled tighter and sutured in place. Patients can rest assured that we will always do our best to make sure the incisions are as small as possible and as well-hidden as possible.

Ideal Candidates for Brow Lift Surgery

The best candidates for brow lift surgery are people who have issues with the upper portion of their face. These prospective candidates should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about what a forehead/brow lift surgery can achieve. Sagging, drooping, or lines in other parts of the face can be addressed with other kinds of facial lifting surgery.

Other Facial Surgery Options to Consider for Anti-Aging

There are other anti-aging options to consider for enhancing overall facial aesthetics. Many find that a Tampa eyelid surgery can work wonders for their overall appearance. This procedure is great for drooping or sagging eyelids, which can contribute to an appearance of advanced age. It’s not uncommon for patients to get both a brow lift and cosmetic eyelid surgery to improve overall facial aesthetics.

Non-surgical Facial Enhancement Options

Surgical anti-aging techniques aren’t the only answer. There are plenty of non-surgical aesthetic skin care options available that can help you look years and years younger. Simply by improving the texture of the skin or enhancing the volume beneath the skin, you can eliminate the appearance of wrinkles without the need for invasive procedures.

During your visit to the practice, we will be sure to discuss all of your options for surgical and non-surgical care in greater detail so that you can make the best possible decision about your appearance.

Necklift (Cervicoplasty)

Neck Lift in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FLThere are plenty of options to consider if you want to achieve a younger, more refreshed appearance. Many people come to our Spring Hill and Tampa facial plastic surgery centers in order to achieve just that. While addressing the wrinkles and lines of the forehead and the eye area are both great options to consider, many people don’t realize how much their neckline can make a difference. By undergoing a necklift surgery, you can actually look trimmer, fitter, and more refreshed without anyone noticing the extent of the surgery that you underwent. Let’s take a look at necklift surgery right now.

About Necklift Surgery

A necklift surgery is a facial rejuvenation procedure that removes loose and sagging skin from a person’s neckline. Both weight loss and the aging process can cause contouring issues with the neckline, and only necklift surgery is able to solve such issues.

The Best Candidates for Necklift Surgery

The best candidates for necklift surgery are people who have issues with loose or sagging skin in their neckline, whether it’s the result of advanced age or of major weight loss. These people should be in generally good health and not suffer from any health conditions that would make surgery of any kind a risky proposition. A facial plastic surgeon in Spring Hill and Tampa will be able to determine if a neck lift is an ideal option for a patient.

The Necklift Surgery Procedure

In essence, a necklift is performed in a similar fashion to a Spring Hill and Tampa facelift, though the incisions are located in different areas. Generally the surgeon will place incisions behind and along the lower portion of the ears. Through these incisions, excess skin, tissue, and fat are removed. Once all adjustments of underlying tissues are completed, the surgeon then pulls the remaining skin tighter and sutures it in place.

Another Option for Contouring the Lower Face

In addition to the necklift, many patients also undergo a lower facelift. This procedure involves the removal of tissue from the lower facial area in order to reduce the appearance of drooping or sagging cheeks/jowls. Both the lower facelift and necklift have been known to be performed in combination with each other, with effects that can be quite dramatic.

Additional Options for Facial Plastic Surgery Enhancement

While targeting the neckline and lower part of the face can really work wonders, there are other great standbys for people looking to achieve a total anti-aging makeover. A brow / forehead lift, for instance, can remove those problematic furrows and deep lines. Similarly, a cosmetic eyelid lift surgery (blepharoplasty) can help you have eyelids that don’t droop or leave you looking prematurely old. These options can all be discussed in detail during your visit.

What to Expect after Blepharoplasty

Blepharoplasty in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FLBlepharoplasty, more commonly known as eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure performed to lift the skin on the eyelids. This not only gives the eyes a more youthful appearance, but also helps patients whose vision has been compromised by the sagging skin on heavy eyelids. When patients come to Tampa facial plastic surgeon Dean George Davis for blepharoplasty, they will receive all the information they need to prepare them for and guide them through the recovery period. For patients interested in lifting and tightening the skin on the eyelids, here is an overview of what our Tampa patients should expect from blepharoplasty recovery.

Side Effects

While the body’s response to blepharoplasty will vary slightly for each person, we typically ask that our patients plan to give themselves between one and two weeks to recover from blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery. Patients will have sutures on both eyelids for about a week after surgery. The incision sites will need to be cleaned and bandages changed per Dr. Davis’ instructions. For our patients in Tampa, eyelid surgery is likely to result in any or all of the following common side effects of blepharoplasty:

  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Discomfort

Dr. Davis will prescribe a pain medication to help patients manage any discomfort following surgery. While bruising and swelling are normal and should subside on their own within two weeks following surgery, there are steps our patients can take to alleviate these symptoms. These include getting plenty of rest (with the head slightly elevated), keeping the body well hydrated, and icing the areas that are bruised and swollen. In addition, patients should refrain from any strenuous activity while they are healing to avoid pulling or bleeding at the incision site. While patients should be able to return to work and be seen in public without any noticeable signs of bruising or swelling within two weeks, the results of eyelid surgery will continue to be refined within the first year following surgery, as the incisions completely heal.

Signs of Complications

It is important for our patients to understand what to expect during recovery from blepharoplasty so that they also know what is not considered a normal side effect of the procedure. If patients experience any unusual side effects during recovery, they should schedule an appointment with Dr. Davis as soon as possible. Some signs of complications from eyelid surgery include:

  • An inability to fully close the eyes
  • Unusual folds or creases in the eyelid skin
  • Dry eyes
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Any loss of vision

It is extremely rare for patients to experience any of these symptoms following surgery, but if complications do occur, Dr. Davis will discuss with you the best way to address these problems.

Schedule an Appointment

If you are concerned with heavy, sagging eyelids and the way they have affected your appearance or vision, schedule an appointment with Dr. Dean George Davis to learn more about blepharoplasty. Eyelid surgery may be just what is needed to refresh and tighten the skin on your upper and lower eyelids.

Nose Job Benefits and Side Effects

Rhinoplasty in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FLA “nose job,” clinically known as rhinoplasty, can dramatically improve the way you feel and look. Patients who are unhappy with the appearance of their noses may benefit from a nose job. Sadly, many of our rhinoplasty patients experience feelings of self-consciousness and insecurity concerning the size and shape of their noses. It is common for patients to experience a boost in self-esteem and self-confidence after undergoing a nose job. If you are unhappy with the appearance, look, or functionality of your nose for any reason, you may benefit from a nose job.

Nose Job Benefits

While the most common reason Tampa facial plastic surgery patients undergo rhinoplasty is to improve the appearance of the nose, there are also functional reasons to undergo nose job surgery as well. Benefits of rhinoplasty include:

  • Correction of birth defects
  • Improved breathing: Functionality issues that can make breathing difficult such as structural abnormalities and narrow nasal passages can be corrected through rhinoplasty surgery.
  • Better facial symmetry: Rhinoplasty can be performed to help make facial features more symmetrical.
  • More flattering nose shape: Rhinoplasty can be performed to give the nose a more aesthetically pleasing shape. Rhinoplasty can be performed to improve the width or appearance of ridges or bumps of the nose.
  • More proportional nose size: Rhinoplasty can be used to reduce the size of a nose that is too large, which can bring balance to the face.
  • Improved quality of life: Patients who are self-conscious because of the appearance of the nose often experience a significant improvement in quality of life after undergoing rhinoplasty. Rhinoplasty can give a person a much needed boost in self-confidence.

Nose Job Side Effects

Fortunately for our patients in Tampa, nose job side effects are usually temporary and begin to subside or improve within a couple of days of surgery. Most side effects can be minimized by diligently following all after-care instructions. The most common side effects experienced by our Tampa rhinoplasty patients are:

  • Nasal obstruction: Some patients experience difficulty breathing after undergoing rhinoplasty. One of the easiest ways to avoid this side effect is by choosing a qualified surgeon who specializes in facial surgery.
  • Bruising: It is common for patients to experience bruising after undergoing rhinoplasty. In fact, bruising resulting from surgery may give the appearance of black eyes. Bruising will typically begin to fade within two to three days after surgery and disappear completely after about ten days.
  • Pain: Discomfort and pain are to be expected after surgery. Pain medication may be prescribed in order to help minimize any pain or discomfort after surgery.
  • Swelling: Swelling around the eyes and nose is incredibly common after rhinoplasty. While the most dramatic swelling will subside within two weeks of their nose job surgery, patients may experience some amount of swelling for up to six months after the procedure.
