Hairline Lowering in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FL
Do you feel self-conscious about your receding hairline or high forehead? Many men and women come to see Dr. Dean G. Davis complaining that their receding hairline makes them look older or less confident. A hairline lowering procedure, or forehead reduction surgery, by dual-board certified facial plastic surgeon Dr. Davis has helped many men in Florida including Tampa, St. Petersburg and surrounding areas improve their hairlines so they look and feel their best.
What Causes a Receding Hairline?
Often what causes a receding hairline is genetic pattern baldness or natural aging. As people get older, their hairline can begin to recede and their forehead may appear larger. The hair follicles at the front and top of the scalp begin to shrink, resulting in less hair growth in those areas. A hairline lowering procedure can lower and reshape the hairline to provide a more youthful, natural appearance. It reduces the size of the forehead and gives the illusion of a fuller head of hair.
What is Hairline Lowering Surgery?
Hairline lowering surgery is a procedure that lowers or reshapes the hairline on the forehead. It is most commonly performed on men who have a receding hairline or high forehead that they want to improve. The main goals of hairline lowering surgery are:
To lower the hairline to a more youthful, natural position
Reduce the size of the forehead
Give the appearance of a fuller head of hair by moving the hairline forward
It involves making small incisions along the natural hairline, loosening the scalp, removing excess forehead skin, and repositioning the scalp tissue lower down the forehead. The hair follicles are preserved so that hair continues to grow at the new, lower hairline.

Hairline lowering is generally done for people ages 30-60 who have a receding hairline and want to restore their hairline to a more youthful position. During your consultation, Dr. Davis will examine your hairline and scalp, discuss your goals, and determine if you are a good candidate for surgery. Patients with realistic expectations and enough hair density are typically good candidates.
How is Hairline Lowering Performed?
Hairline lowering is performed under local anesthesia with IV sedation as an outpatient procedure. Dr. Davis will make small incisions along the front hairline and lift the skin to lower the hairline. Excess forehead skin is removed. The scalp is brought forward and reattached in the new position using dissolvable sutures. Any hair transplant procedures needed to increase hair density can be done in combination. The procedure takes 2-4 hours depending on the amount of reshaping needed.

There will be some swelling and bruising along the incision lines that resolves after 1-2 weeks. Any soreness can be managed with medication. Head dressings need to be worn for about a week. Most patients can return to work within 10-14 days. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 6 weeks. The final results fully refine over several months as the hairline continues to heal.
