Tattoo Removal (Face, Head and Neck) in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FL

Tattoos are a wonderful way to express yourself and tell your personal story to other people. Unfortunately, though, the popularity of tattoos has led to many men and women getting a permanent piece of art on their face, head or neck that they later regret. If this sounds like you, call the office of Dr. Dean G. Davis, a dual-board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and otolaryngologist who specializes in tattoo removal for those living in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and surrounding areas of Florida.

Once upon a time, a tattoo was a permanent, irreversible embellishment on your skin. Now, thanks to newly developed techniques, plastic surgeons in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and all across the United States can safely and successfully remove unwanted tattoos. These new tattoo removal techniques can be used on tattoos of all shapes and colors, whether they are professional or homemade.

What is Tattoo Removal?

Tattoo removal by surgical excision is the process of removing an unwanted tattoo by cutting into the skin with a scalpel to physically remove it. The wound is then stitched closed. Removing a tattoo by excision is extremely precise and highly effective.

Whatever your reason for wanting to remove your tattoo, whether you have outgrown it or regret getting it or just simply want to have a more clean-cut appearance, we can help successfully erase your tattoo.

Benefits of Tattoo Removal

Here are some of the benefits of tattoo removal by excision:

  • In many cases, it only takes one session to remove the tattoo
  • Precise removal that leaves the adjacent skin intact
  • Minimal scarring
  • No longer have to bear an unwanted symbol of the past
  • A cleaner, more professional appearance

How is Tattoo Removal Performed?

Dr. Davis generally performs surgical tattoo removal on small tattoos of the face, head or neck. If the skin is elastic enough, he can remove larger ones, as well. However, when it comes to removing larger tattoos, the surgical method can become very time-consuming and exhausting.

Surgical removal involves making an incision in the section of skin where the tattoo is located and removing it through excision, or cutting away the tattooed skin. Once the tattoo is removed, Dr. Davis tightly draws the skin together and sutures the incision. If a tattoo is significant in size, then it may need multiple sessions before it’s completely removed. The procedure is usually conducted with localized anesthesia. General anesthesia is an option for larger tattoos or if a patient requests it. The patient can return to their usual activities the same day.

For larger tattoos, a special procedure can be done to create a skin distender. The goal is to create an excess of skin large enough to cover the deficiency caused by the tattoo’s removal.
The advantage of surgically removing a tattoo is that it’s completely removed. The disadvantage is that the skin where the tattoo used to be will be marked by some scar tissue, which commonly persists after surgery.

Preparing for Tattoo Removal

You must avoid any sun exposure for several weeks prior to your tattoo removal procedure. When you are a few days out, avoid taking any blood-thinning medications, such as aspirin or ibuprofen (Advil).

Tattoo Removal Recovery

After the tattoo has been removed, avoid sunlight and use a moisturizing cream or lotion. If you have to go outside, apply sunscreen with an SPF factor of at least 30. To treat discomfort, apply cold packs and take any prescribed medications.
