Rhinoplasty in Palm Harbor, FL

Your nose is the focal point of your face. If it is asymmetrical, too overpowering in proportion to your other facial features or otherwise an undesirable shape, or if you’re unable to breathe properly because of the physical shape of your nose, rhinoplasty can reshape these flaws. Dr. Dean G. Davis is a dual-board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and otolaryngologist who corrects flaws in the nose to create a more attractive, symmetrical nose and face for both men and women of Palm Harbor, FL through rhinoplasty.

We fully recognize the important correlation between the shape and size of the nose and the rest of the face, and also, the different qualities men and women want in a nose. Men are often after a nose that reflects their other masculine, rugged facial elements, like a defined jawline, while women often want a nose that correlates well with their lips, chin, eyes, and hair. Our distinct comprehension means that we are able to individualize methods of treatment to best suit each of our patients. The nose must be proportionate to the rest of the face.

If general or revision rhinoplasty interests you, contact Davis Facial Plastic Surgery centrally located in Tampa.

Rhinoplasty – An Overview

Rhinoplasty is a nose surgery, or nose job, which reshapes the patient’s nose. It can be done for cosmetic or functional purposes. Revision rhinoplasty is another option, which corrects a previous rhinoplasty procedure, again for cosmetic or functional purposes. Dr. Davis is a rhinoplasty specialist who is well experienced in the field. Because of Dr. Davis’s excellent reputation, other physicians refer their patients to him to receive superior results in their procedures.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Being more confident, social, vibrant and youthful, as well as being able to breathe better, can all be achieved with a successful rhinoplasty surgery. Nose surgery can have remarkably significant, lasting effects on your quality of life and should not be underestimated. When you look and feel good about a more symmetrical appearance, it positively benefits both your professional and personal relationships. If self-consciousness about the appearance of your nose is holding you back from creating your most positive life, this surgery can expand numerous possibilities for you.

Rhinoplasty Surgery – Available Techniques

All noses are different, and all nose surgeries should be as well. As such, there are many different techniques designed to focus on different concerns. Determining which procedure would fit your needs depends on many different factors. Your nose shape and appearance goals will be discussed during your first consultation at Davis Facial Plastic Surgery to determine which treatment techniques best meet your needs. The following techniques may be recommended:

Open rhinoplasty

The open rhinoplasty is the most common cosmetic nose surgery. During this procedure, incisions are made in both the inner and outer parts of the nose and on the connective tissue that separates the nostrils, which is called the columella. After incisions are made, the skin on the nose is raised so the surgeon can access the inner structure of the nose and reshape the cartilage. Excess skin and cartilage are then reduced and tissue grafts are inserted so the new shape of the nose is maintained. Finally, the incisions are stitched up. This common treatment allows Dr. Davis to have full access to the nose structure, which means a simple and effectual procedure and predictable results for the patient.

Closed rhinoplasty

Another common treatment method is the closed rhinoplasty, in which all incisions are hidden within the nasal cavity. This means there are no external incisions in the process, which is a great benefit of this treatment option. The outline of this treatment plan, however, can be more difficult. But when performed by an expert, this procedure can result in attractive, natural-looking results. Recovery time is the same as the recovery time for open rhinoplasty.

Ethnic rhinoplasty

While no rhinoplasty procedure is specific to any particular ethnic background, ethnic rhinoplasty refers to procedures that address certain physical characteristics and visual goals of individuals with non-Caucasian backgrounds. Physical characteristics of different ethnic noses are often significantly different from one another and surgical treatments will vary accordingly. There is not one particular treatment that will produce the desired result of every patient. Some ethnicities have noses that are broader, narrower or have a wider tip, and skin thickness will also differ from patient to patient. With his vast experience, Dr. Davis is able to understand these unique characteristics so he can individualize each treatment based on his or her traits and goals. The Tampa office of Davis Facial Plastic Surgery caters to Hispanic, Asian or African-American patients interested in rhinoplasty.

Revision rhinoplasty

Not all surgeries turn out the way they should and if your previous rhinoplasty resulted in an undesirable nose or other complications, revision rhinoplasty might be the best option to repair the problem. This surgery is significantly different from primary rhinoplasty because the nose is no longer in its original form and now contains scar tissue, tissue grafts, and an altered nose structure. These factors must be considered when formatting a treatment plan for revision rhinoplasty. Dr. Davis has over 10 years of facial cosmetic surgery experience with outstanding results and has the skills necessary to perform revision surgeries properly. Fellow physicians even refer their surgeries to him often.

Deciding on the type of surgery that will best fit your needs will rely on many different factors, although most patients are best treated with the open approach, especially when revision rhinoplasty is involved. The most efficient rhinoplasty form will be discussed during your initial consultation at our Tampa office. Because everyone’s needs and physical attributes are different, each treatment plan is different and will be customized to obtain your desired effect. While the closed rhinoplasty treatment can be more attractive because it hides any incisions, outlining the particular process of the surgery can be difficult. Dr. Davis professionally guides you through steps of determining which rhinoplasty technique would be the best fit for your treatment.

Computer Imaging

Rhinoplasty candidates can preview their new look at Davis Facial Plastic Surgery by viewing their post-operation nose using a nose job simulator. Surgeons and patients are able to use this computer imaging technique to see possible outcomes of the procedure. Dr. Davis can also better explain what effects each of the different changes would have on the patient. The image can show a general idea of the rhinoplasty plan, even though it does not always reflect the actual result. The final outcome can change from the imaging because variations in nasal abnormalities and healing abilities may affect the final outcome.

Often, patients come to their first consultation with Dr. Davis with a concept of what they would like their new nose and appearance to look like. Dr. Davis may have advice and suggestions of how a natural result may be achieved. To better demonstrate the new nose options, the nose job simulator is used so communication is clear between Dr. Davis and the patient on the goals of the procedure. The nose job simulator changes the image of a patient’s nose digitally so it reflects the changes that can be accomplished by the treatment plan discussed at the first appointment.

The nose job simulator is very useful for helping the patient see what their nose could look like after the procedure. However, it does not take into consideration the individual nasal structure of the patient or the differences in the healing process. Structural changes may be necessary, such as repositioning or trimming a patient’s severely deviated septum so it properly lines up with the center of the nose and this may impact the changes Dr. Davis must make to the dorsum. Dr. Davis must carefully consider every section of the nose so that the structural integrity of the nose is maintained. The nose job simulator is only able to show surface changes to the nose, not the intricate changes necessary to the internal nasal cavity during the procedure. The most accurate reflection of what a nose after rhinoplasty could look like is to personally meet with Dr. Davis.

Improving the Nasal Tip with Tip Plasty

Often, simply changing the very tip of the nose can make a difference, if the natural shape is overly large, misshapen, turned up or down or square. Tip plasty may often be a better alternative to a more exhaustive and invasive rhinoplasty. Many procedures are available to reshape and augment the nose tip. Dr. Davis uses many of these methods to change the size and shape of the cartilage in the nose tip, which can define and correct excessive roundness by using grafting, extension and types of suturing.

Tip plasty is also available as a closed procedure, in which incisions are only made on the inside of the nose. A tiny cut is made in the columella, which is the dividing part of skin between the nostrils. A closed tip plasty is significantly less extensive than a full rhinoplasty surgery. Further, this procedure only takes an hour to complete and uses only IV sedation or local anesthesia. It also requires a shorter and easier recovery period. Swelling and bruising are less significant and because the incisions are located inside the nose, scarring is nearly invisible. Patients are usually ready to go back to their normal schedules and activities in a week or less after surgery.

Recovery and Aftercare – Post-surgery Process

The recovery process is very proactive at Davis Facial Plastic Surgery. The first step to achieving the best results is making sure the area being augmented heals properly. Rhinoplasty patients are given vitamin supplements both before and after the procedure to proactively encourage the body to heal itself and to minimize discoloration and swelling. For approximately two weeks, splints and tape dressing are utilized to minimize bleeding and swelling, guide the healing process and protect the fragile area from damage after surgery. Remaining discoloration is usually easily covered with makeup after the splint and tape are taken care of, 12 to 14 days after the surgery.

Restrictions

To ensure the best possible healing outcome, some activities will be limited during recovery. Strenuous activity and wearing eyeglasses should be avoided for six weeks after the rhinoplasty takes place. Blowing your nose will also be restricted during the recovery time because it could cause complications and interfere with proper healing, but the nasal saline spray can be used. After the initial recovery period, we will demonstrate how to best wear eyeglasses and sunglasses so that the surgical outcome is not affected.

The first six weeks after surgery is the recovery period and afterward, you can return to your normal daily routine, including playing sports and taking part in any strenuous activities while enjoying the appearance of your new and improved nose. While your daily life will no longer be impacted by the healing process of your nose, full healing will not take place until roughly a year after the surgery is completed. Cartilage and long-term fibrosis changes take awhile to complete.

How much does Rhinoplasty Cost?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty or revision rhinoplasty is usually an out-of-pocket expense, as medical insurance providers consider them to be elective procedures. If your rhinoplasty is for functional reasons and is done with a septal surgery, it may be covered by insurance. We are happy to assist you in determining whether your insurance or CareCredit® financing can be utilized. Other payment methods accepted by Dr. Davis are cash and credit card.
