Rhinoplasty in Brandon, FL

The nose is quite literally the most prominent feature on any face. If it is not in proportion with the rest of the face due to its size or shape, if injury has deformed it, if genetics have left it misshapen or if for any reason it doesn’t perform its function of breathing naturally, Dr. Dean G. Davis, a dual-board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and otolaryngologist, can help. Dr. Davis ensures that the people of Brandon, FL attain proper nasal form and function through rhinoplasty.

The balance between nose and face is crucial to self-image, which is something that we fully understand in our practice. Men and women come to achieve the symmetry that they desire: a man often wishes to balance his nose with his more rugged jawline, whereas a woman may want her nose to complement her feminine features, such as her lips and eyes. Each person’s look is unique, which is why we customize our treatments to make individual patients happy.

If you are in any way dissatisfied with your nose and think that rhinoplasty, including revision rhinoplasty, might be right for you, contact Davis Facial Plastic Surgery’s conveniently located Tampa office. We will be happy to help you begin the process today.

Rhinoplasty—An Overview

Rhinoplasty, commonly referred to as a “nose job,” is the reshaping of the nose and can be performed for cosmetic or medical reasons: perhaps one patient is unhappy with his appearance, whereas another patient is having trouble breathing. In some cases, a previous surgery was unsuccessful and has to be corrected, a process known as revision rhinoplasty. Dr. Davis is the premier rhinoplasty specialist in the Brandon area. Other physicians often refer their patients to him. His reputation for excellence and years of experience assure consistently outstanding results.

Benefits of Rhinoplasty

Value cannot be placed on the increased confidence and self-esteem that can be the result of successful rhinoplasty; they are priceless. Patients who achieve a more proportional appearance as a result of this procedure report feeling younger, more attractive and more social, as well as experiencing positive changes in the way people perceive and treat them. Personal and workplace relationships often improve, as does your general quality of life. If you feel that your nose is not balanced with the rest of your features and this imbalance negatively impacts other areas of your life, we encourage you to consider the benefits that rhinoplasty can offer.

Rhinoplasty Surgery—Available Techniques

Every candidate is unique and has specific aesthetic goals; therefore, rhinoplasty is a highly individualized procedure. At Davis Facial Plastic Surgery our foremost consideration is making you happy with your results, so we first consult with you at length and evaluate what approach is right for you. Rhinoplasty encompasses several different techniques. You can be assured that we will use the correct technique to meet your needs. Possible techniques include:

Open Rhinoplasty

Open rhinoplasty is the most common type of cosmetic nose surgery. During this procedure, the doctor makes incisions inside and outside the nose and on the columella, the tissue connecting the two nostrils. He then lifts the skin through the incisions for full access to the inner cartilage so that he can restructure it according to the patient’s specifications. Once he has reshaped the nose, the doctor places tissue grafts in place to maintain its new shape. He then closes the incisions with sutures. This procedure is simple, efficient and delivers predictable results.

Closed Rhinoplasty

The advantage of closed rhinoplasty is that the doctor makes all the incisions inside the nose, where they are hidden from view. The drawback, however, is that it is harder for the doctor to be as specific when outlining how the intricate procedure will take place. However, Dr. Davis is a skilled surgeon who has produced beautiful, natural results using closed rhinoplasty, making it a viable option. Recovery time is not an issue, as both open and closed rhinoplasty require the same amount of time.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty

Every rhinoplasty procedure is customized for each unique patient. No particular procedure is reserved for any patient based on his or her ethnicity. However, some nasal characteristics, such as width and skin thickness, can differ depending on a patient’s ethnic background. While there is still no “one-size-fits-all” technique, Dr. Davis is familiar with how physical characteristics of different ethnicities can vary and he tailors treatment accordingly. Any patients of non-Caucasian ethnic heritage can feel confident about achieving their desired results at the Tampa office of Davis Facial Plastic Surgery.

Revision Rhinoplasty

Revision rhinoplasty is a procedure used to correct the results of an unsatisfactory previous nose surgery. It differs from primary rhinoplasty in that the nose structure has already been compromised, so the doctor has to consider issues such as tissue grafts and scar tissue, among other things. Dr. Davis is a skilled and experienced surgeon in this, as well as all other forms of rhinoplasty, with over 10 years of medical practice dedicated solely to facial cosmetic surgery. He often receives referrals from other physicians, so you can rest easy knowing that you are in confident, competent hands for your revision surgery.

Your experience with Davis Facial Plastic Surgery begins with a thorough consultation in which you will discuss your needs with Dr. Davis in detail. This consultation will determine which technique the doctor will use to help you meet your goals. Most rhinoplasty, including revision rhinoplasty, uses the open approach, but the procedure is not universal and your treatment will be suited to your goals. The closed approach may be the way to go in some cases where it is important to hide any incisions inside the nose, although it will be more difficult for the doctor to outline the procedure for you in exact detail. Whatever your decision, you can be confident that you are in the best hands, and that you will receive all of the professional guidance you need to move forward.

Computer Imaging

Patients feel more confident about moving forward with rhinoplasty when they have an idea about what their nose is going to look like when it’s over. Davis Facial Plastic Surgery has a modern computer imaging system commonly called a “Nose Job Simulator” which can demonstrate what the planned changes will look like on a patient. However, the patient must understand that this imaging is not an exact science; it provides a general idea, but cannot predict exact results. Every patient has a unique nasal structure that will heal in its own way, affecting the final appearance of the nose.

Most patients coming in for a consultation with Dr. Davis have a preconceived notion about what they want to look like after rhinoplasty. After speaking with the patient, the doctor will also have suggestions about how to achieve the best, most natural looking result. Computer imaging is helpful for both the doctor and patient so that they can decide together which changes to make. A pre-surgery picture of the nose is displayed on the screen, which Dr. Davis can digitally alter to demonstrate the proposed changes and bring himself and his patient to a mutually satisfactory consensus regarding how to proceed.

Patients must remember, however, that while the simulator is a useful means of predicting an outcome, it does not take into account each patient’s structural differences or unique healing process. It displays the outside of the nose, but cannot predict the intricacies of what goes on behind the scenes. Dr. Davis is committed to maintaining nasal function and integrity, and in so doing may have to repair a deviated septum or other abnormalities that he may find once he gets below the surface. Any correction he makes will have an impact on the final result. Computer imaging combined with a personal consultation with Dr. Davis is the best means of obtaining the clearest possible idea of what your post-rhinoplasty nose will look like.

Improving the Nasal Tip with Tip Plasty

Not all patients need an extensive rhinoplasty. If they simply would like to repair or correct the tip of their nose, then tip plasty may be the correct avenue for them. A nose tip that is overly round, fleshy or upturned would not require the entire nose to be restructured. Dr. Davis can reshape or improve the nose tip appearance through such techniques as grafting, excision and specific kinds of suturing.

Tip plasty has many benefits when compared to complete rhinoplasty surgery. It is usually performed using the closed technique by making a minute incision in the columella, or tissue connecting the two nostrils. This process is less invasive and less time consuming: a tip plasty usually only takes about one hour. The sedation is also less intensive, as a tip plasty can be performed under IV sedation or local anesthesia. Recovery is typically easier for tip plasty patients because the minimal swelling and bruising heal quickly and the scarring is not noticeable due to the closed technique. About a week after surgery, most patients are ready to resume normal activities.

Recovery and Aftercare—Post-surgery Process

Proper healing ensures the best results in both post-surgical appearance and well-being. That’s why at Davis Facial Plastic Surgery we are very meticulous about our pre- and post-operative care. We actively promote healing by providing vitamin supplements before and after surgery to minimize swelling and bruising and placing splints and tape dressings over the nose, post-surgery. These dressings prevent post-operative injury and help to control swelling and bleeding. They are changed after one week and then taken care of after about two weeks. Although there may be some residual bruising after final dressings are taken care of, it can usually be adequately covered with makeup.

Restrictions

After any type of surgery, patients are generally asked to restrict their activities for a prescribed period of time to safeguard the healing process. Rhinoplasty patients are no different. For the first six weeks post-surgery, you should not engage in strenuous activity or wear eyeglasses. You should also avoid blowing your nose for the same amount of time, to avoid complications or possibly injuring the still very sensitive surgical area. You may use nasal saline spray. After the six weeks of recovery are over, we will need to teach you how to wear eyeglasses or sunglasses to avoid placing stress on the nose.

At the six-week mark, you can resume normal activity including workouts, sports or other strenuous pursuits. However, you should be aware that your nose is not quite finished healing and changing for about a year. Long-term fibrosis changes to the tissue and cartilage will continue to take place during that time.

How Much Does Rhinoplasty Cost?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is generally not covered by any insurance plan, as it is considered an elective procedure. If the surgery is done for functional reasons, however, insurance may cover some of the cost. You should be well informed as to your insurance carrier’s policy regarding this surgery. Davis Facial Plastic Surgery can help you determine insurance coverage. We also offer CareCredit® financing if you are interested, and can assist you with using that service. Dr. Davis also accepts payment via cash and credit card.
