Facial Reconstruction in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FL
Birth defects, genetic abnormalities, and trauma cause the bones, soft tissues and other structures of the face to perform improperly. Additionally these conditions can affect a person’s appearance, resulting in low self-esteem and even depression. As a dual-board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and otolaryngologist, Dr. Dean G. Davis is uniquely qualified to perform facial reconstruction to improve the quality of life for those living in Tampa, St. Petersburg, and surrounding areas in Florida.
What is Reconstructive Surgery?
Every year, approximately one million reconstructive procedures are performed by plastic surgeons in the United States. Be it helping a child with a congenital defect, young adult after a tragic accident, or elderly person with problems due to aging, reconstructive surgery is the perfect solution for patients of all ages.
Unlike cosmetic surgery, which aims to correct cosmetic imperfections on an otherwise perfect face, reconstructive surgery aims to correct congenital deformities, developmental abnormalities, trauma or injury, infections or disease, and tumors. While it is generally done to improve a function, reconstructive surgery can also be done to approximate a normal facial appearance. In so doing, reconstructive surgery has the added benefit of restoring the patient’s self-esteem.
However, even though reconstructive plastic surgery has come a long way in improving facial appearances from even 10 years ago, no reconstructive surgery is “perfect.”
Who Has Reconstructive Surgery?
There are two types of patients that have reconstructive surgery:
- Patients with congenital (i.e., at birth) defects, and
- Patients with developmental defects that have arisen as a result of trauma, disease, age, or infection.
Some common conditions treated by reconstructive surgery include:
- Congenital deformities
- Deformities caused by diseases (such as cancer) or trauma (such as accidents or falls)
As is the case with so-called acquired deformities such as burns, cosmetic procedures that are thought to be aesthetic in nature can be done to achieve a reconstructive goal. For example, while eyelid surgery is thought to be a cosmetic procedure, older adults whose vision is compromised because of prolapsed eyelids may find that a blepharoplasty (or eyelid surgery) will also help correct this issue; in other words, it’s not just a cosmetic procedure. While the outer appearance is enhanced, the overall goal achieved as a result of the surgery was to improve the patient’s vision.
Another example is otoplasty (outer-ear corrective surgery) that is performed on a child whose hearing is negatively impacted by deformed ears.
It takes time to recover from facial reconstructive procedures. It is important to follow Dr. Davis’s post-operative instructions carefully. However, once you heal, you will be overjoyed with a lifetime of positive results!
