Nasal Valve Collapse
in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FL

The nasal valves of your nose are key to controlling the amount of air that enters your respiratory system. When the valves collapse, patients experience difficulty breathing, congestion and other signs. Diagnosis of nasal valve collapse is difficult, so you should rely on the expertise of Dr. Dean G. Davis, a dual-board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and otolaryngologist. With his skills and expertise, the residents of Florida including Tampa, St. Petersburg and the surrounding towns feel confident about their treatments for nasal valve collapse. Davis Facial Plastic Surgery does not accept any medical health insurance plans.

Nasal Valve Collapse Repair

When nasal valves collapse or no longer work properly, airflow can become restricted and promote health problems. If this has happened to you, Dr. Davis might suggest surgery to fix the nasal valves, which is known as nasal valve collapse repair. This surgery can be performed to fix both the external and internal valves. Another name for nasal valve collapse is nasal stenosis.

Internal Nasal Valve Repair

Internal nasal valves are situated in the narrow area of the nasal cavity, which is near the upper part of the nose bridge. These valves may collapse due to injury from sports or accidents. Previous rhinoplasty procedures may also cause the internal nasal valves to collapse, especially if a closed rhinoplasty procedure was used. In these situations, the nasal cartilage is rendered incapable of supporting the valves and holding them open, leading to hindered airflow. This doesn’t just promote impaired respiration, but it may also cause noticeable deformities on the outside of the nose.

Internal nasal valve collapse can be treated in several ways. During your consultation, Dr. Davis assesses your unique case and recommend the best avenue of treatment for you. In most cases, spreader grafts can be placed to widen the parts of the nose surrounding the valves. However, in other cases, patients may also require turbinoplasty or septoplasty to ensure that the collapsed valves are completely repaired.

External Nasal Valve Repair

The external nasal valves are located just inside of the nostrils. When these collapse, patients often suffer from narrowed nostrils or a nose tip that protrudes outward excessively. External nasal valve collapse is often due to previous rhinoplasty surgery that resulted in weakened nasal walls or caused the nose tip to sag. In some cases, external valve collapse can be age-related, wherein the nose tip extends and sags, restricting the passage of air through the nose.

Rhinoplasty is typically the preferred treatment for external nasal valve collapse. However, in order to ensure optimal results and avoid future problems, the procedure must be done by a surgeon with ample experience in treating nasal stenosis, like Dr. Davis. During the procedure, Dr. Davis may place batten grafts to make the external valves wider and provide nasal wall support. This surgery can significantly improve nasal airflow while also repairing any cosmetic deformities caused by the collapsed valves.

Both external and internal nasal stenosis are medical problems with real health risks. For this reason, surgery to repair them may be covered by your insurance. If you require surgery to repair nasal stenosis, it’s critical to choose a surgeon with expertise and experience in addressing your particular type of collapse. This surgery can help restore proper breathing, as well as correct any related disfigurement.
