Facial Cancer Treatment in Tampa and St. Petersburg, FL
Each year approximately 1,000,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with skin cancer, and an estimated 20% of the population will be diagnosed during their lifetimes. One of the most common forms, especially in Florida, is facial cancer caused by sun exposure. Dr. Dean G. Davis is a dual-board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and otolaryngologist who specializes in facial cancer treatment for residents of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and surrounding areas in Florida.
Skin cancer treatment normally involves the surgical removal of the cancerous lesion or tumor and post-operative reconstruction. Dr. Davis and his staff work to help their skin cancer patients not only achieve a cure, but also offer the best options for reconstructive or restorative surgery after skin cancer treatment. Since the treatment of skin cancers is medically necessary, excision and plastic surgery repair of these lesions are typically covered by medical insurance.
Skin Cancer Types
Basal Cell Cancer
Basal cell cancer is the most frequent type of skin cancer. Fortunately, it also has an extremely high cure rate of nearly 99% when early treatment is given. Areas that are most frequently impacted by this form of cancer include the ears, lips, and nose. These areas require a more delicate procedure to be done by a facial plastic surgeon, and Dr. Davis has performed literally thousands of these skin cancer excisions and repairs.
Basal cell skin cancer usually appears as a raised tumor that has pearly borders with large surface blood vessels evident.
Squamous Cell Cancer
Squamous cell cancer is the second most commonly seen form of skin cancer. When treated early, it also has a very high cure rate. Its symptoms and appearance can be varied, but is normally seen as a raised tumor that is ulcerated and bleeds upon touch.
Malignant melanoma usually presents as a dark brown or black patch that has irregular borders. When a mole changes shape, color, or size, it should be examined for melanoma. This type of cancer should be treated early and very aggressively to keep it from spreading.
Skin Cancer Causes
Skin cancer is normally caused by prolonged sunlight exposure without adequate protection. Ultraviolet, or UV, rays from sunlight damage the skin. Another source of UV radiation is tanning beds that can prematurely age the skin and lead to cancer.
UV rays are able to go deep into the skin and are responsible for premature aging, sagging, wrinkling, and a leathery skin appearance.
Other forms of UV radiation can penetrate deeply into the skin and result in burning. All forms of UV rays can lead to the development of skin cancer and premature aging of the skin.
Using adequate skin care protection can prevent long-term damage from UV radiation and prevent premature skin aging and skin cancer tumors. Skin creams and lotions are the best forms of skin protection when spending hours outdoors during times of peak UV exposure.
What are Reconstructive Procedures?
In the general medical community, reconstructive procedures primarily aim to restore the function of a specific area of the body. For example, someone may suffer severe damage to the face during a car accident. Reconstructive procedures are used to rebuild the structures of the face and repair any physiological and anatomical problems that resulted from the trauma.
As a dual-board certified facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon and otolaryngologist, Dr. Dean G. Davis takes reconstructive procedures one step further. Using his skill, experience, and knowledge, he restores function with careful consideration of the aesthetic appearance of your face and skin.
Dr. Davis specializes in
Facial Skin Cancer Treatment
Some patients will have their skin cancer tumors removed with the Mohs surgical technique by their dermatologist. Dr. Davis will work with your dermatologist to reconstruct the defect or “hole” made in your skin after such a treatment. Each surgical repair is uniquely designed for each specific patient to provide the best functional and cosmetic outcome possible.
In other circumstances, your dermatologist may recommend the skin cancer be treated by Dr. Davis. In these cases, the tumor will be removed with confirmation of a curative excision using frozen margin pathology. This allows Dr. Davis to perform the site repair immediately after the successful excision. These procedures may be performed in an office-based setting or in an outpatient surgery center for optimal patient comfort.
Dr. Davis is also able to treat the most worrisome of skin cancers – malignant melanoma – with the most advanced techniques available. Melanoma patients not only need excision or their skin cancer tumor and reconstruction, but many of these patients benefit from sentinel lymph node mapping and excision. Dr. Davis is one of a very few surgeons in the Tampa Bay Area who is able to provide these cutting-edge procedures.
